Lesson Plans for Sept. 28-Oct. 2, 2015

Monday

Topics:  Review of how to open an email, how to reply to an email

Activities:  We will brainstorm as a class a list of good questions that students can ask their classmates in order to discover more about them.  Students will then write their names and email addresses on slips of paper.  The slips will be randomly distributed to class.  Students will then write to the email address they have received.  They will introduce themselves and pose four of the brainstormed questions.  Check for complete sentences and spelling mistakes before sending.  Students will then respond to the emails they have received and pose 4 questions back.

Tuesday-

Topics:  Formal, informal, and semi-formal emails; do’s and don’t in email writing

Activities:  Students will take notes over different styles of emails; will then divide the class into pairs.  Each pair will get sample “good” and “bad” emails.  They are to choose one partner to be the scribe for their group.  He or she will draw two columns on a piece of paper and write the headings Dos and Don’ts at the top.  The pairs will then compare the two emails and try to discover the rules of writing a good email.  They should write the rules in the correct column.  We will then come back together as a class to discuss what they found.   Next, we will discuss emailing a tourism company of a city of their choice asking for any information they require.  For today, they will just need to get on the Internet to gather information on a tourism company in a city of their choice and note the email address for tomorrow.

Wednesday-

Topics:  Writing a semi-formal email for communication

Activities:  Students will use the model email from yesterday (worksheet 2b) as an example and follow the list of rules discussed to compose an original email to a tourism company in a city of their choice requesting information on said city, its attractions, etc.  Students will type rough draft of email in MS Word, print one copy, and save on their flash drive as Tourism Email.  Turn in rough draft into box for a daily grade.

Thursday

Topics:  Professionalism and proofreading

Activities:   Students will receive another’s students rough draft email to proofread for errors.  After proofreading, students are to give back to owner to  correct any errors, resave (Tourism Email), and reprint.  Students should staple rough draft of email to back of new printout and turn into the box for Mrs. Ross to proofread.

Friday

Topics:  Sending of semi-formal email

Activities:  Students will receive their proofread email back from Mrs. Ross.  They are to pull up their email program and retype their email to the tourism  company.  Students are to raise their hand BEFORE hitting send so Mrs. Ross can proofread one last time for errors.  If ok, they are to then send their email.  Hopefully they will get a response in a week or two!
